Same-day courier vs Royal Mail Special Delivery and Parcelforce: which one, when?
Royal Mail Special Delivery, Parcelforce express24 and a dedicated same-day courier compared on price, speed, weight limits, compensation and proof, with a plain rule for choosing.
Three services get used for 'this has to get there quickly' and they're not interchangeable. Special Delivery is a tracked letter and small-parcel product with a next-day guarantee. Parcelforce is a parcel network with bigger weight limits and next-day or two-day options. A same-day courier is one vehicle on your job alone, today. Here's how they line up.

When Royal Mail or Parcelforce is the right answer
- It can wait until tomorrow and it's under 20–30 kg.
- It's a document or a small box going somewhere a post van goes anyway.
- Price matters more than the hour it arrives.
- You're sending many parcels to many addresses; a network is built for that.
When you need a same-day courier
- A production line, a surgery list, a court hearing or a trade show is waiting for it.
- It's heavier or bigger than a parcel: machine parts, a pallet, a batch of stock.
- It must not be handled by anyone else or go through a depot: samples, high-value items, prototypes, legal bundles.
- You need to know exactly where it is and who signed for it, with pictures, within minutes.
The simple rule: if 'tomorrow' is fine and it's under 20 kg, post it. If 'today' is the whole point, or it's heavy, book a van. Trying to make Special Delivery do a same-day job (driving to a sorting office, hoping) usually costs more in time than the courier would have.
