Breakdown cover vs pay-as-you-go recovery: which is right for a courier van?
An honest comparison for owner-drivers in the West Midlands: annual breakdown policies against on-demand recovery like Recoverer, with the numbers that actually decide it.
Every owner-driver gets asked the same question at renewal time: pay £120 to £250 a year for cover you might never use, or pay nothing until the day you need a truck? Here's how to decide it with your own numbers rather than an advert's.
What annual cover really includes
- A call-out limit, often 5 or 6 a year, after which you pay anyway.
- Commercial vehicles are often excluded or loaded: many consumer policies won't cover a van used for hire and reward at all. Read the small print before you rely on it.
- A recovery distance limit on the cheaper tiers ("to the nearest garage", not to your garage).
- Response times that are averages across the whole country, not a promise for your postcode at 11pm.
What pay-as-you-go includes
- A fixed price shown before you book, based on your postcode, vehicle type and destination. No surprise invoice.
- The nearest available recovery driver, not whoever the national call centre has under contract in your area.
- A live map and ETA, so you can tell your customer the truth.
- No exclusion for commercial use. A van is a van.
The arithmetic
Take your last three years. How many recoveries did you actually need? Most owner-drivers with a serviced van say one, maybe two. Multiply that by a typical local recovery fee and compare it with three years of premiums. For most people the policy only wins if the van is old, high-mileage and you're doing long-distance work where a tow home from 150 miles away would be expensive.
| Your situation | Usually better |
|---|---|
| Serviced van under 8 years old, mostly West Midlands work | Pay-as-you-go |
| Older van, regular national runs, history of breakdowns | Annual cover with long-distance recovery included |
| You run 2 or more vans | Pay-as-you-go: policies are per vehicle, recovery is per incident |
| You've been refused cover because of commercial use | Pay-as-you-go: no application, no exclusions |
Why we built Recoverer this way
The same company behind Swiftline runs Recoverer, and both came from the same frustration: being told a price after the job, and not knowing where the driver was. Both platforms show the price up front, dispatch the nearest driver and track them to your door. If you drive for Swiftline you'll recognise the app immediately.
Whatever you choose, keep the number in the van, not just in your phone. A dead phone and a dead van on the same night happens more than you'd think.
