Same-day courier vs parcel network: which one should you book?

When a dedicated same-day van is worth the money and when a parcel service is the right answer. A practical decision guide for businesses in the West Midlands.

We're a same-day courier, so you'd expect us to say book a same-day courier. We won't. Most things you send should go through a parcel network, and we'd rather you trusted us for the jobs that matter than overpaid on the ones that don't.

Book a parcel network when

  • It's not needed today.
  • It's small, light, and you can replace it if it's lost.
  • You're sending many items to many addresses.

Book a same-day courier when

  • A machine, a shift, a court date or a customer is waiting on it today.
  • It's too big, heavy or awkward for a parcel network, or it's a pallet.
  • It can't go on a conveyor: fragile, medical, high value, original documents.
  • You need to know exactly where it is, and have proof of exactly who received it.
  • It's the one shipment that a parcel network already lost last time.

The honest cost comparison

A same-day van looks four to ten times more expensive than a parcel. But a line-down machine costs a factory hundreds of pounds an hour. A missed court filing costs a case. A replacement part that arrives the day after the engineer left costs a second site visit. Price the delay, not the delivery, and the decision usually makes itself.
